Pitching inside. Learn to pitch inside the right way
Pitching inside is one of my favorite subjects. Being a former major league catcher, it was something that I was very passionate about. It is something that is learned over a period of time and in my opinion, is a must if you want to succeed in getting people out.
I don't care if you throw 70 mph or 100 mph, you can still learn to throw inside. Pitching inside establishes a lot of things of importance. It widens the outside part of the plate for you. And it also is the prime area for getting groundballs in double play situations. When I caught, I loved it when the pitcher established the inside part of the plate early in the game. It opened up more options later in the game. Once you have the hitter thinking inside and worried about the inside pitch, you have him eating out of your hand. This takes him out of his normal game plan and into yours. Early in the game, I called a lot of pitches on the inside of the plate, and not necessarily a strike. I liked the pitcher to come off the plate inside and establish this. The hitter would either yank it nine miles foul or take it. Again, this takes him out of his zone. As the game progressed, you were able to go to the outside part of the plate more successfully and established that you were in control. There are other instances that coming inside is better. You have a runner on first and need a double play. In my opinion, nothing beats a sinker low and inside to illicit a groundball and inning ending double play. Just remember, pitching inside is crucial to becoming a successful pitcher. Learn how to pitch inside and the rest will open up for you. If you constantly live on the outside of the plate, you are giving the opponent every opportunity to extend his arms on every pitch. On the other hand, if you pitch inside, you will tie him up.
