Hitting the other way. Learn the basics
Do I need to know about hitting the other way? Or should I pull the ball? Good questions, but in my book and most big league hitters, they will tell you that you need to know how to hit the other way in order to learn about staying inside the ball.
What does that mean 'staying inside the ball'? It means that your hands travel on a path that stays between your body and the ball. A direct approach to the ball. The same principle applies in golf. you will hear how golfers take the inside path to the ball. When you are hitting the other way, your hands come on an inside approach. How do I learn to hit the other way? It all starts with drills such as the tee, the fence drill, and playing pepper the other way. In batting practice, instead of trying to hit the ball over the fence, practice hitting the ball to the right side. Start your batting practice off this way. And than ease into using the whole field. When you are hitting the ball the other way, you learn how to let the ball come into the zone and than stroking it the other way. If you try to reach for the outside pitch and guide it that way, you will lose power hitting the other way and you will notice the ball will fade to the right. You will also pop the ball up harmlessly. It's referred to as the 'dying quail' and for good reason. When you are letting the ball come into the zone and than exploding on it, you will stroke the ball the other way with authority and it will travel straight. The key to this is learning the drills that I have provided on this website to get you going in the right direction. One of the other most important keys is having great balance. With great balance you are able to create bat speed and to keep your stroke short. Remember, have great balance, let the ball come into the zone, and stroke the ball the other way. Why should I learn how to hit the other way? Simple, if you want to progress up the ladder in baseball, you need to know how to hit the other way. You will get a steady diet of off speed pitches on the outside corner once they exploit your weakness. So learn it!Also, by knowing how to hit the other way, you are training your stroke to come through the zone the right way. With your hands inside. The shortest path to the ball. Which, if you remember, allows you to wait longer on the ball and not get fooled. Remember, you can email me with questions about your swing and how to improve.
