COLLEGE VERSUS PRO
College versus pro- should I sign?
This weighs heavily on every high school player that dreams of someday playing major league baseball. I know I certainly had this problem to think about.
Whether to sign or not is unique to every situation.
What should it be, college versus pro. There are those that will argue that college is the only way to go. I disagree for several reasons. But let me just throw out a few things for you to consider.
Whether to go or not depends on several factors. One of them is the maturity of the player. The second factor is how high in the draft did the player get to. The higher in the draft you are, the more money you can sign for, and the more of an investment you are to the big league club.
If you sign higher in the draft and for more money, the team will keep you around longer because they have more of an investment in you. Does this make sense? You bet it does.
For the most part, I would tell most young players to get their education. For several reasons. One of them being the education. It is a great experience. The other is this, it allows you to gradually adjust to being on your own at a major college. With this in mind, you grow and mature before you even sign a pro contract.
Should I turn pro? Or should I go to college. College versus pro. Like I said, it is unique to every person and situation.
I would tell someone to sign if these factors are present. One, you are drafted very high. Which equates to money. The money they are giving out these days is hard to come by and you may never have that chance again to get ahead financially. If you don't make it, you have a nice nest egg in which to hang your hat on and start your life. Two, you are drafted high and are offered alot of money and the team puts you through college by paying for your tuition. This is a no brainer to me. Let's play this out a bit.
Suppose you turn down the offer and play the following year at a college and suffer a career ending injury. There goes your million dollars that you were offered the previous year. And the bottom line is the chance to play in the majors.
So my advice to you is this, if they draft you high and offer you alot of money, go for it! It is a chance of a life time. And if things don't work out, you have a nice nest egg in the bank in which to start your life. And also make the team pay for your college education, this is something else you can hang your hat on if things don't work out. An education and lots of money in the bank. Now that sounds like a great way to start out!
