Valuable catching tips and advice

Tips on catching. I played this position for as long as I can remember. I ended my playing days behind the plate and to this day, I still have a passion for it.

As they say in the baseball world, you have to be crazy to want to put on the 'tools of ignorance'. I disagree. It all starts out with having a love for the position. I can remember dreaming of playing catcher. That's how much I loved it. The rest evolved from there. Watching my idols, Johnny Bench, Gary Carter, and Thurmon Munson.

Some basic things to know about this position are pretty simple. It starts out with having good balance with your feet. Keeping your feet about shoulder width apart and keeping your body underneath you. Also, you learn how to receive the ball, and bring it up around the ear on a short path and get rid of the ball. An outfielder you will see with a long throwing motion. From behind the plate you have to have a short throwing motion that is designed for quick releases.Practice your throws this way as you learn to develop it.

A good drill for this is to get down on your right knee with your left leg out in front of you. Have someone throw you the ball and all you do is catch and get rid of the ball as fast as you can, staying on top of the ball. This will promote a good release and will develop your technique for releasing the ball.I liked to do about ten or twenty throws this way before even standing and throwing.

Once you are standing, practice moving into the ball as it is thrown to you. What I mean by this, as the ball is coming, meet the ball as you are walking into it with your right foot, at the same time as you are receiving the ball. Once you have caught it, simply turn your shoulders and get rid of it. This should all be one motion. You're receiving the ball as you walk into it with your right foot slightly forward the same time the ball hits the mitt, than turn and throw. Keep practicing.

I also liked to play long toss, stretching out the arm and getting good extension on my throws. I would than shorten it up and more on a line as the person was coming back closer to me. I would do this behind home plate by squating, than turn, on top of the baseball, and throw to the center fielder using good fluid motion and stretching the arm out as far as I could. After that, throwing on a line to second base seemed really short!
