Baseball Knee Injuries

BASEBALL KNEE INJURIES

To first understand about knee injuries, you must first understand the anatomy of the knee and how it functions during baseball. By understanding what makes up a knee, you can use various techniques and strength exercises to help avoid baseball knee injuries. Ones that could stop your career in it’s path.

The knee is generally made up of the patella (knee cap), the 4 ligaments that supply stabilization. The ACL, PCL, LCL, MCL.

  • ACL= Anterior Cruciate Ligament (connects the femur to the tibia in the center of your knee,it limits rotation and forward motion of the tibia)
  • PCL= Posterior Cruciate Ligament ( also connects the femur to the tibia and limits backward motion of the tibia)
  • LCL= Lateral Collateral Ligament (limits sideways motion and runs on the outside of the knee)
  • MCL- Medial Collateral Ligament ( runs on the inside of your knee and limits sideways motion of the knee)There are also tendons and muscles that comprise the region of the knee as well as the meniscus cartilage.

Your knee connects the femur (upper thigh bone) to the tibia (lower leg bone) and as you can see has many functions. Let’s watch a brief video of the knee and what it does..And don't worry, you won't have to take the exam!

By understanding the anatomy of the knee, we can better understand how this trauma occurs and how to avoid it.

It is vitally important that we use proper technique when playing baseball. For instance, when a catcher is tagging out a runner at home plate, it is important that he has the proper weight balance and form on the leading leg, or he takes a chance of injuring one of the key ligaments that helps to support the knee. This baseball knee injury can wipe out an otherwise promising career.

Also, using proper weight lifting techniques to build strength in your legs is another way to help stabilize your legs for the amount of punishment that you endure during the course of a game. Stretching properly helps limber up all your joints and increases flexibility and blood flow to the region. All, vitally important for the rigors of the game.

Baseball knee injuries can be avoided if you understand how important it is to use proper techniques while playing the game and by increasing your strength and consistently stretching.
