Baseball defensive drills consist of many drills designed for many different outcomes. What I am going to do is give you drills that I know will help you on a personalbasis and a team basis. By improving your personal skills, you will only help yourself and your team.
So where do we begin? How do you practice properly? I am going to start you off right by letting you check out my page on “how to practice”. You will gain valuable information on the right frame of mind and mental preparation that will assist you in getting better, faster.
There are so many different drills and different viewpoints on what is the best drill and what works best. For simplicity I will divide it up into geographic areas of the diamond.
·Outfield ·Infield ·Pitchers ·Catchers
For Outfielders, being in the right position as the pitch is being delivered (the ready position) is half the battle. Knowing your pitcher and what he likes to throw (does he throw a lot of fastballs and are the hitters behind on his fastball? Or does he throw a lot of offspeed and hitters are pulling a lot),etc, etc.
Here are some basic drills from Mike Winters HS baseball coach at Farmington MN. He explains beautifully the way you can practice so your out field play improves. Check it out!
For Infielders- keep it simple. The fundamentals stay the same. Practice staying low, keeping the bill of your cap facing forward, hands out in front and watch the ball into the glove.
You should feel like you are almost sitting in a chair with your glove out in front of you.
A good drill is to have someone roll you the ball until you get the correct feel and then have them hit the ball to you. Let's watch David Wright of the N.Y. Mets illustrate what to do:
Keep coming back to this page by linking from the baseball drills homepage as I will be adding more and more of these exercises to help you out. Some drills will be left out because you will find that every site out there will try and list drills just for the sake of listing anything. I am trying to show you what drills assisted me from little league on up to the world series. The ones that I endorse for helping you out.
