BASEBALL PRO SCOUTS, WHAT THEY LOOK FOR
Baseball Pro Scouts, what do they look for?
I know growing up that I was always worried about what they were looking for. What do they look for?
Baseball pro scouts rate a player on a number of factors. And it boils down to five things to put it simply.
Hitting, hitting with power, arm strength, fielding, and speed. You may have heard the term "a five tool player". Now you know where it came from.
But is this all they look at? Absolutely not. There is also what is called projectibility which is subjective. A scout will combine all the tools of an athlete and try to project where he will be five years from now. They will also try to envision if they can see this person playing in the major leagues.
They will also judge mental toughness. Sometimes this is a factor that is over looked. However, it is imperative to know what kind of kid you are dealing with. How does he handle situations with the game on the line?
Does this kid hustle on and off the field? Is he mentally in the game? Does he take charge of situations?
These are all components that go into the makeup of a possible draftee.
Each physical part of the evaluation is given a score, than they factor in the other intangibles to project what this athlete might be in the near future.
My advice to you is simple. I had a saying when I was growing up and dreaming about playing the big leagues. It was "Work to be the best". It was a mantra I carried with me. Always work to be the best. Give it your best effort, do drills to make your already talents even better, and always hustle. And you will get noticed.
